Go Chia, It’s Your Birthday

50 Cent got it right: whether or not it’s your birthday, there’s always a reason to party. And to have enough energy to hang out with your friends, play a sport, or study into the night, you need something to fuel those activities. goChia! may just be the solution.

Chia seeds are harvested from Salvia hispanica, a flowering mint family plant native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala. Chia was a staple food crop–used as widely as maize–for the Aztecs. Its rise to prominence in the U.S. kicked off in the 1980s thanks to Chia Pets (who could forget, “Ch-ch-ch-chia”?!), as well as researcher Wayne Coates’ studies of chia as an alternative crop for northern Argentinean farmers. Trend-watchers considered chia seeds the “It Food” of 2013, and its incorporation into countless products today show that its popularity and success are still on the upswing.

While preparing for a marathon and researching how to train better, co-founder Chandra Davis discovered the most recommended nutritional edge came in the form of chia seeds. Chia seeds offer high fiber and the ideal ratio of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, adding a nutritional punch and keeping you fuller longer. Moreover, they can be eaten whole or milled to access their health benefits (unlike flax seeds which require the grinding process). She experimented with how to incorporate the superfood into her and her family’s diet, ultimately settling on a sought-after drinkable blend of chia seeds, fruit juices, and natural sweeteners. Along with brother/foot and ankle surgeon Gideon Lewis and fitness trainer Mark Thesian, Davis brought Drink Chia–which evolved into goChia! as it expanded its portfolio–to fruition.

One of the most recent additions to goChia!’s product line is its Chia Bites: a grab and go mini-indulgence uniting the powerhouse nutrition of ancient grains with subtle sweetness. Two flavors–Dark Chocolate and Cherry Chunk–are available. The snack is chewy and crunchy in each bite; after eating this as a mid-morning snack, I still felt full past lunchtime.

Should you want to add chia to your diet, look no further than goChia!’s portable packets. The Chia Boosters come in pure and flavored versions with Lemonade + Super Greens, Cherry Berry, and 100% Chia Seeds. The possibilities are endless: water, smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, salads, cookies, and more. A sprinkle of the pouch on my avocado toast one morning made for one satisfying breakfast.

goChia! aims to power healthy bodies and fuel vibrant lives. Join Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin and others around the world to prove the team’s mission right.
