PC: See’s Candies

Bloggers’ Bites is a series of posts chronicling the foodie adventures of Penn Appétit’s blog staff. In honor of the sweet holiday weekend, we asked our bloggers, “What’s your favorite candy?”

Nicole Woon: I grew up on See’s Candies. From Scotchmallows, with their layers of sticky caramel and honey marshmallow enrobed in rich dark chocolate, to Kona Mochas, cores of coffee and milk chocolate covered in white chocolate and toasted coconut flakes, to P-Nut Crunch, the crunchy peanut butter center wrapped in smooth milk chocolate, you name it, I ate it. No trip to the local post office or shopping center was complete without ducking into the nearby See’s Candies outpost. When the sweet smell of chocolate hits you upon entering, you’re in heaven. I never turn down the free sample they offer guests and often leave with more chocolate than I intend to purchase going in. Today, my treat of choice is Bridge Mix: almonds, pecans, raisins, mini Molasses Chips, California almond brittle, and caramel bits, all coated in silky milk and dark chocolate. This is literally happiness by the handful.

Emily Waxman:  Although I’ve never been a huge candy fan (I’m one of those weirdos who prefers salty snacks to sweet ones, and whose Halloween candy always ended up getting thrown out), I’ve always been partial to chocolate. My all time favorites are See’s Candies’ box of nuts and chews or Godiva’s dark chocolate and raspberry, but even a classic Hershey’s milk chocolate bar with almonds will do the trick. Extra points for anything heart shaped (not too hard to find around V-day).

Chase Matecun: I’m not a big candy person myself, but it’s hard to resist sharing a giant bag of chocolate covered pomegranate seeds with my friends. One by one (or handful after handful) the rich chocolate coating gives way to the sweet acidic crunch of pomegranate on the inside—it’s the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Chelsea Goldinger: As a kid, I was obsessed with Twix candy bars. I would do my best to eat the chocolate and caramel off first, so that I would be left with the cookie at the bottom all by itself. Apparently, it was my favorite part. I have no idea if I would still enjoy a Twix today, so anyone reading this, feel free to give me one so I can find out! Today, my favorite candy involves anything with premium quality dark chocolate, like the Marcie Blaine dark chocolate cinnamon red hot chocolate I enjoyed last night.

Ellen Duong: Advertised as after-dinner mints, After Eights are square dark-chocolate covered mint fondants good for any time of the day. In your mouth, the dark chocolate outer layer breaks and reveals the gooey delicious mint center. I first had these wafer-thin mints as part of a Christmas basket and have loved them ever since.

Carolyn Koh: If I had to go to CVS and select one ‘candy’ at their aisle of sweets, I’d have to go with Ritter Sport chocolate, specifically dark chocolate with hazelnuts; I love the sweet and salty and crunch combination.  But if you say that’s not candy, I’m afraid no candy can satisfy me!
