Chic & Saucy covers fine dining in Philly with an equal emphasis on food and flair

The term “supper,” largely used to connote an “informal family meal,” captures the essence of this South Philadelphia restaurant that breaches the gap between cozy and upscale.

Talented married couple Mitch & Jen Prensky own Supper, which opened in 2008, after a decade of success with their catering company, Global Dish Caterers. Mitch characterizes his restaurant as a place that “under promises and over delivers.” And it’s true- Supper’s understated interior and well-executed dishes will deliver the epicurean farm-to-table adventure you’re looking for.

For me, Supper’s all American comfort food was an ideal choice to combat the biting temperatures of Philadelphia’s cold front during restaurant week. At first glance, Supper’s ambiance is inviting- its warm walnut tones and buttery baked aromas take you to your grandma’s home cooked Sunday meals.

Excitedly waffling between the drink specials, I chose to start with The Links cocktail, a mix of honey bourbon, lemon and black tea. A worthy choice, the drink went down like butter, thawing my toes in the process.

My first dish, the farm greens and herb salad, with apples, chicken “cracklins,” and crumbly cornbread was a homey delight. My dinner mate Katie, a lover of comfort food, enthralled by the buttermilk dressing and cornbread combination, verbalized a series of “mmm” and “yumm” throughout the course.

My next dish, the Amish style chicken and waffles, was ambrosia. My knife sliced through the succulent meat into the fluffy waffles, each bite enrobed in rich sauce and finished with tart cranberry compote. I labored to construct every bite with equal parts waffle, chicken, cranberry, and gravy- the fusion of flavors and textures was a celebration in my mouth.

My dessert, a pear cranberry cobbler, was mediocre, with which I was perfectly content, given the state of my expanded waistline. However, my dinner mate’s chocolate blackout cake, a spongy balance of sweetness, was the clear winner. Despite its oozing profusion of chocolate, my stomach only allowed me to manage a few small bites before admitting defeat.

Dine at Supper on 926 South Street for an elegant twist on comfort food that won’t disappoint.
