Always looking for ways to introduce our customers to supremely enjoyable coffee experiences, HubBub Coffee Company has recently introduced Nitro Cold Brew in all three of our locations. HubBub has joined elite coffee shops in New York, Portland, and San Francisco in serving this innovative beverage, which falls somewhere between coffee and beer.  Andrew Crockett, HubBub’s founder and owner says, “This stuff is awesome. We are borrowing a concept from the beer world and arguably pushing the envelope of coffee like we never have before.”

Indeed, craft beer lovers may recognize the term “Nitro,” as many bars have a dedicated nitro tap, from which pours smooth, creamy beer. Here’s how HubBub’s Nitro Cold Brew works: we start with our regular cold brew (though, this powerful potion made with Stumptown’s Hairbender is anything but regular), which we always keg up and serve on tap. After searching high and low and with the help of some friends, one of our tap lines now sports a special piece of equipment which forces the cold brew through teeny tiny holes and infuses it with nitrogen.

The result is extraordinary. As the coffee pours, it cascades beautifully down the glass, its lovely caramel color giving way to a deep black. Because it is pressurized and nitrogenated, the cold brew has a seriously thick, rich body and a creamy white head.  The visual and textural experience is highly reminiscent of a classic Irish stout, but the flavor is unmistakably coffee. This method harnesses science, beer technology and creativity to deliver a whole new way to experience HubBub’s cold brew.

HubBub’s Nitro Cold Brew can be found at each of our locations: 3 Logan Square (1717 Arch Street) in Center City, 3736 Spruce Street in University City, and 232 N. Radnor Chester Road in Radnor, PA. A 16 ounce Nitro Cold Brew costs $5 and is poured fresh from our cold brew draft system to order.
