“Irish Potatoes”: A Tantalizing Pot of Gold

For over 100 years, the Pennsylvania General Store has been making a tantalizing Irish treat. The candies come wrapped in green paper, like little pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. But, just like leprechauns, these bite-size treasures are quite deceiving. Coined “Irish Potatoes” the confections look like miniature potatoes upon first glance. Their shape, somewhat oblong, and their coloring, a light brown, closely resemble that of potatoes. However, as soon as you take the first bite (which, admittedly, is often the entire candy!), it becomes quite clear that no potatoes are used in creating these devilish delights. Instead, the candies consist of a cinnamon coating and a velvety coconut center. Quite sweet, the custard-like center is cut by the cinnamon. The ingredients then combine to melt perfectly over your tongue, enticing your taste buds to try just one more. Be careful, for before you know it, you’ll have eaten the entire box!

The candies are sold at the Pennsylvania General Store in Reading Terminal Market. They can also be ordered by phone at 800-545-4891 or online at http://www.pageneralstore.com/category/IrishPotatoes. The candies come in two sizes: one pound ($12.99) or five pounds ($49.99).

With St. Patrick’s Day fast approaching, you want to be sure to catch these tasty little imps, which could have been made by the leprechauns themselves!
