Say Cheez: Custom Grilled Cheeses in NJ

Over Thanksgiving break, I ate more than the traditional turkey, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. While staying with my cousins in Princeton, New Jersey, I was treated to one of their favorite places to get food, Say Cheez. Offering custom grilled cheeses and soup, Say Cheez has a grilled cheese for everyone.

When I went, I tried the Mac and Cheese, the Farmer, and the Princeton. The Mac and Cheese was exactly what it sounded like, with creamy macaroni and cheese in place of cheese. The macaroni and cheese was delicious, and the simple sandwich was a satisfying bite.

On the wackiness scale, the Princeton lays right in the middle, with its mixture of peppers, onions, chicken, bacon, and American cheese. The add-ins provide great texture in the sandwich. They also create a filling with an interesting and well-balanced flavor. Each bite has the sweetness of the veggies, the salty savoriness of the meats, and the sharpness of the cheese. I would have preferred more heat in the sandwich, but overall the Princeton is a delicious take on the traditional grilled cheese.

For something less traditional try the Farmer, with goat cheese, roasted beets, and spinach. While it does not have the familiar, cheesy, salty flavors that grilled cheeses normally have, the goat cheese gives a sweeter, milder taste to the sandwich. It also adds an extremely creamy texture that contrasts well with the bitter spinach and sweet roasted beets.
