U-Bahn: Opening Celebration

Make your way over to U-Bahn! The new underground bar and event venue on 1320 Chestnut Street has finally opened its doors. Teddy Sourias (Brü Craft & Wurst, Finn McCool’s) has created a space unlike any other. U-Bahn should be your next destination for good music, local eats, a varied selection of beers and cocktails, and an overall of evening of fun. We got to check out the venue, and it most definitely did not disappoint.

DSC_0294The entrance to U-Bahn, adequately named after the metro that runs through Berlin, is easy to miss. Keep a lookout for the giant glowing U sign and step through its dark glass doors. You are immediately led downstairs into a subterranean space outfitted with wood and vintage lighting.

The space has 2 bars with 15 local beers, generally German styles, on draft, in addition to taps for two Yards selections and three cocktails.

Though the beer selection might vary from time to time, U-Bahn serves 15 PA craft beers and has cider always on tap. For their opening party, they served beers such as Victory Earth & Flame, a Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy style beer, and Renart’s Tripel. Our personal favorite was the Yards La Corsica Love Stout, an aromatic stout featuring La Colombe coffee.

U-Bahn also showcased a spread of cheeses, meats, pickled vegetables, and other small bites. The full menu includes old school bar snacks, a new take on Philly crowd-favorite sandwiches, an assortment of pickled delights, and a variety of cheese platters.

Their menu is crafted by Executive Chef Andrew Gaspar, and all cheeses are sourced from Valley Shepherd Farms in Long Valley, New Jersey.

DSC_0301Our personal favorites included the peppers pickled with shallots and citrus, a bright burst of flavor that showcases the in-house pickling program.

DSC_0319In case you needed another reason to stop by U-Bahn, we encourage you to check out their retro arcade games. Next to the stairs are a selection of four vintage arcade games, including Madden and Mortal Kombat. U-Bahn promises- and successfully delivers- a night of good food, good drinks, good music, and some good ol’ fun.
