I recently asked my friends what food group they would choose (fruit, veggies, dairy, meat, or grain) if they had to live on another planet and could only bring one with them. Nutrition was not a variable because they would receive supplements for whatever was lacking in their diets (yes, these types of questions actually cross my mind). While some answered meat, fruits, and vegetables, no one answered grain, except me. Honestly, I found this surprising because I love grains–rice, oatmeal, bread–I love it all. I love grains so much so that I would forsake all other food groups just to be rolling in rice on another planet.

Thankfully, I’m here on Earth, but that doesn’t mean I can’t start practicing my utilizing my grains now (you never know). This week, I ventured into bread making with this Épi de Blé recipe courtesy of Canadian Living (which, strangely enough, I first watched on television in the Bahamas). I guess it goes to show that bread knows no boundaries.

Now, while you’re probably thinking making a baguette is really difficult–it’s not! Yes it’s hard to make a perfect baguette, but looks aside, it’s pretty standard to get the right taste. All you need is a couple of hours, most of which are spent letting the dough rise, which makes this the perfect weekend endeavor while doing some homework.

Trust me, even if your baguettes are oddly skinny and deformed (see image above) you’ll love the end result.
