Philly Wine and Food Festival

This past Friday night the 2013 Philadelphia Wine and Food Festival, an annual fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, featured over 600 wines from around the world and food from 19 local businesses. Penn Appétit staff was, obviously, ecstatic to report on the offerings. Here’s a little taste of what we got to try!

Farro Salad from SoWe Bar and Kitchen in South West Center City Philadelphia–Maiitake Mushrooms, Pickled Fennel, Blackberry and Hazelnut Vinaigrette

This salad was one of the favorites of the night. The farro grain made it more filling than a classic green salad, while still feeling light and healthy. The hazelnut vinaigrette and pickled fennel served as a interesting flavor combination that complemented the grain. At SoWe Bar and Kitchen, they are also serving up other comfort dishes, elevated above the classic.

Asian Tuna Tartare with Avocado from Harvest– Avocado, Wasabi Crème Fraîche, Sesame Seed Wonton, Blackberry Ponzu

The fresh tuna piled on these thin, crunchy chips created a satisfying texture contrast. The creamy avocado and heat of the wasabi complemented the tuna perfectly. We definitely recommend stopping by Harvest to try these if you’re around this summer!

 Cheese from Igourmet—Agour with Espelette

Igourmet is a website that will deliver specialty cheeses and fine foods right to your door. At the festival we sampled their Agour, a creamy sheep’s milk cheese accented with Espelette chili pepper. It pairs well with mild fruits, like plums and currants, and a glass of your favorite red.

Ibéricos Tempranillo 2010 Rioja from Soto de Torres

This red wine from Rioja, Spain, has notes of forest fruits and spices. The bold hints of cherries and tannins create a unique, and elegant taste. It complements dishes like grilled steak and roasted lamb. And, at only $15 a bottle, it is affordable for all budgets.

Overall, this festival was a great opportunity to sample some of the best food and wine in Philly. And, best of all, it was all for charity.
